Is it hockey season yet?

NBC is horrible when scheduling what Olympic event they are showing and at what time. For example, they make a big deal about the Russia vs Czech Men’s hockey game which started at noon yet they show it at 3pm. At the same time the biggest game for North America, the US vs Canada Men’s hockey game, is shown live at 4pm. WTF were they thinking? 2 of the biggest games being shown at the same time even though they were staggered by the Olympics so people could watch both. This isn’t the first time they’ve messed up either cause all of the games up to this point have either been cut to mid way through or they make the viewer change stations mid way through a period but it’s not seamless cause when you get to the new station they are still finishing up with what was already being shown on that station. Not to mention they don’t take TV timeouts in international play so when they come back to the game from commercial you’ve missed parts of the game.
I understand that there are so many different events going at the same time, but you have like 5 different channels showing stuff yet you still delay showing em so you can get better ratings. Meanwhile all the news agencies around the world post the results of who won which metals and takes the excitement out of the Olympics.
First they fuck up the Tonight Show with giving it back to Leno, now they destroy the Olympics. Massive FAIL on their part.
Up in San Jose again for another graduation. Drove up with Jordan and Mom on Wednesday and Brian’s graduation was on Thursday in Emeryville. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I love it up here. If it weren’t so damn expensive to live up here I would move.
I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. Moving out of San Diego. Not cause I don’t like it there, but cause I’d like to get out of town for a bit while I can. I don’t really have anything keeping me in San Diego right now since my job allows me to work from anywhere I have an internet connection. It would be tough for me to move being as though I would miss friends and family, I have a sweet set up living with Jordan and Elvia and I do love it in San Diego. I’ve never lived anywhere other than SoCal and I’d like to see what it’s like elsewhere. You know, get out and see the world so to speak. I think it would be good for me to get into a new “scene” of people, make new friends and all that stuff. I have a lot of friends and with their friends, I know a good amount of people in SD. For me it’s tough to meet people out of this group of people in San Diego, but I feel it will be easier for me in a different town. Especially when you’re the “new kid” in town.
While up here we went to the Lick Observatory which is just East of San Jose. You can see it up on the hill from most of the Bay Area I guess. The drive up there was super cool. Steep hills and windy roads for a good 30-40 minutes. Made me feel like I was driving in the Swiss Alps or something like that. The observatory itself was pretty amazing as it was built in the early 1900′s and has all those little touches that you don’t see in buildings of today. Makes me wonder what people will think in 100 years from now when they look back at the buildings being built today. Will they think they are boring? I think they are. No one really goes into fine detail like they did in the past. I guess the real question is will the buildings still be here in 100 years since most aren’t made as good as they were back in the day.
Tomorrow I fly out of San Jose to Phoenix and then on to Newark, NJ. Tony and I are going out there for some work stuff an we’re staying with some of his family at night and going to New York City during the day. I’ve never been to New York City and I’m really looking forward to it. We’ll have a few hours each day to see a little bit of the city, but not much. I’m cool with that cause it will give me an idea of what to expect for the next time I do go back for an actual vacation and also get me used to how a big subway system works for when we go to Belgium next year for my birthday.
The Kings hockey season starts tonight and it’s about time. I’m ready for some NHL hockey and here’s to the Kings making the playoffs this season. This is the 3rd year of my 5 year prediction that the Kings would win the Stanley Cup. I have a good feeling that I’ll be right. We’ll just have to wait and see now won’t we.
I have not been keeping up on my updates to this here blog. Not sure how many read it but it will be cool to go back and read it when I’m like 64. I’m gonna start updating on a more consistent basis. Here’s what we got in short:
- Vegas next weekend for Frozen Fury 12, will be our 3rd year.
- Going to see the Reverend Horton Heat and Motorhead in Vegas on the 10th with Sergio.
- Work is awesome and I love it.
- Gonna be selling CDs and LPs at the Pearl Jam show on the 9th for Lou’s.
- I’ve been rocking the gym with Sergio. Lost about 10lbs so far, but looking like I’ve lost more. Means I’m getting ripped.
- Planning a trip to Belgium next year for my big 30.
- Not playing music. Lots of people have been asking me to jam with em, but only one or two sound like fun.
- Pretty much got my finances in order and should be debt free by the end of October.
I’m sure there’s more but I forget all the cool shit. Like I said, I’ll try and document it here rather than Facebook and such.
- going to the gym is more fun than I thought it would be.
- I think eating better will be pretty easy.
- I love how I now love the things I used to hate
- North Park looks so different now.
- I still don’t understand body language and actions and I will never understand the opposite sex, then again, I should just tell em how I feel. Just hate the fear of rejection.
-I still have no clue what others think of me, not that I should really let it bother me.
- busy month. Murder city next week, as well as the reverend then off to Nashville.
- can’t wait till Viva.
- I love hockey and I love the kings.
More later….
So, here it is Tuesday and I’m on the train again. I don’t remember where I left off last week so I hope I don’t double up on anything. Friday I went to the Fish Joint in O’side with my friend Megan. I had not been there since like a week after it opened maybe 5 years ago or so. Really good sushi and way more options since I can remember from last time. Can’t wait to plan a trip there with Toby and Adrian. Soon my friend, soon.
After that I went down to 2 Roses Tattoo to watch a skating video called “From deathbowl to downtown” followed by the Creepy Creeps playing live. The movie was pretty rad cause it showed the transition from freestyle skateboarding into what we know now. Never realized New York had such an impact on street skating. Normally when you think skating you think SoCal. This movie is kinda like the Dogtown and Z boys for the current generation. The Creeps played a blistering set as they normally do, but I do have to admit it was kinda weird seeing them play an all ages show. Ran into my other friend Megan, what is it with me knowing so many people with the same name, her roommate and Rayna. was good to see them all there.
My buddy Drew is doing some tattooing now and she needed to practice on some people since practice makes perfect. So on Saturday I went down to Flesh Skin Grafix in IB and got a tattoo. Of course it’s pirate themed since that’s kind of my thing. Turned out pretty sweet and I’ll have her tattoo on me again for sure. The rest of the night I just worked on getting the rest of my cd collection onto my computer. It’s taking me forever to get this done. I’m halfway do so there is an end in sight even though it’s way off I’m the distance. We also watched the NHL skill competition which is crazy. I don’t think I would want to be in front of a 105.4mph slap shot no matter how much padding I had on.
Sunday Jordan, Elvia and I went to the farmers market by out house and got some stuff. I wanna go again this week and get some more of the garlic stuffed olives we got. Why is it things you hated when you were young you end up loving as an adult, but most of the stuff you loved as a kid you still love today? When we got back I did some more burning of my CDs to my computer while I did a little moving around in my room. I have to tidy up everything every few weeks cause I can’t stand things being one way for too long. Maybe I have a slight case of OCD but it only applies to my room/desk/work space. Linda weird.
Yesterday I worked on getting music added to Think Indie since were almost ready to launch. I sooooo can’t wait to launch the site. There is always reservations when launching a new site, but with this one I got a real good feeling about it. Not sure why but I do. I mean, we’re not tying to take down iTunes cause that’s not going to happen, we’re just giving indie record stores a chance to provide high quality mp3 to their customers since downloads is a new viable format. If it does real well and we do well it will be an added bonus.
This weekend is Magic Mountain for Spencer’s birthday. Haven’t been there I’m forever. I’m really looking forward to hanging out with friends at MM.
So, here’s what’s been going on in the world of Drewvis. The biggest thing to happen is I’ve put in my “two week” notice at Lou’s, but I’m not really leaving until the 30th of December. Where are you going? you might ask. Well, here is what I’ll be doing. Lou’s is one of many independent record store part of the Coalition Of Independent Music Stores or CIMS for short. It’s a group of stores that can get really cool exclusive releases from bands and labels as well as cool free give aways due to the amount of stores and people that go through those stores rather than is say Lou’s went to a major label and asked for something cool to give away. All the stores benefit from the program. Power in numbers ya know. So, a few years back there started talk between all the stores about how to go about selling downloads. Again, if Lou tried to start his own he couldn’t one, afford it, and 2 doesn’t have the time to get all the deals worked out on his own. So as a group they all chipped in and started a download store that they all benefit from.
Tony left Lou’s after a good 20+ years working there to head the digital store being as though he had done the most extensive research on how a digital store works. He and I did a lot of searching on the web about this stuff as well as were on top of all the new crazy stuff going on in the world, thanks to digg.com, so we both had ideas going on this. He never really asked me if I would want to work on the site with em, but then again I never really asked him if I could work on the site with em as well. Fast forward a few months once details have been hashed out about the digital store and then Tony and I decide that it was time for me to come work with him after seeing the site can’t be run by just one person. This was like the first of November that it was decided and we also decided there is no way it would be cool if I only gave two weeks notice. Tony was the main guy there for so long and I kinda took over after he left. So that would be 2 big time employees leaving Lou’s and just before the holiday season. Not something we would put not just co workers, but friends and family, through.
I currently have cut down my time at Lou’s to 4 days a week, and then I work 2 days with tony on the digital store. The digital site is pretty awesome to work on. I get to listen to a bunch of music I never would check out even working at a record store. I do have to go up to Oceanside rather than Encinitas so that kinda sucks, but I’m taking the Coaster and it fucking rules. I feel all old and business like by taking the train to work every day. I need to either get an i-Phone or get a wifi card so I can surf the net or play games on the hour trip soon or I might have to take up reading. Elvia was nice enough to hook me up with an i-Pod Nano since I gave my i-Pod to Rage so i get to listen to music the whole way. I like it quite a bit.
So there’s that part of my life. The other part of my life is what is on plan for New Years Eve. On deck is a weekend in LA with Jordan, Elvia, Jase and Geri as well as out good buddy Zane Lamprey from the tv show Three Sheets. It’s cost us $209 a person, but we get open bar from 9-1:30 as well as free buffet all night long. Now I’m not talking shitty booze and weak ass drinks all night, but really good shit. Check it out on his site. The food is supposed to be really good as well so I’m really looking forward to spending time with everyone at an awesome event. After we all got our tickets I though it would be cool to see a Kings game while up there, but didn’t think they would be playing. Sure enough they are playing, but not till the 3rd so if we wanted to see em we would have to stay up in LA a few extra days and that would be expensive.
Geri decides to check into maybe renting a house near the NYE party and just hang out up there. Sure enough it’s a bit cheaper for each of us to rent a house than to get hotel rooms every night. She found this pretty awesome place and nabbed it up so we can lock it in before anyone else did. They are making the plans to show us around LA for a few days and we get to have this really nice and private place to go home to while up there. So not only is it going to be a kick ass NYE, but start to 2009. I thought playing a show with the Reverend Horton Heat and Lemmy couldn’t be any better, but shit… I can’t wait to see what happens at the end of 2009. OHHH, and the best part of going to the Kings game is that they have a deal going that game of 2 tix, 2 nachos and 2 beers starting at $57. We got the $100 and something package so it’s pretty much a 2 for 1 deal. Last but not lease Jase and Geri’s kids, Jacob and Jordan, will be joining in on the hockey action as well as our good friend Melissa. So much fun is going to be had.
Now to go back a bit, We also went to VEGAS back in September for Frozen Fury XI at the MGM. Jase and Geri joined in on the fun of course. We met Luc Robitaille as you can see in the picture. The rest of the weekend is kind of a blur though. I remember walking over to the Hofbräuhaus from the Hard Rock, but don’t remember getting back to the MGM. Lots of pool chillin was going on, lots of booze was consumed, amazing food was had and hockey was watched. It’s for sure now, We’re going to Frozen Fury every year from now on. After having that much fun 2 years in a row how could we not. We’re just going to have to make sure we don’t have all of our fun on the first day there. It’s hard to do that when you’re in Vegas though.
That’s about it for right now. What you got going on?
When the leaves start changing, it gets darker earlier in the evening and there is a weird chill in the air you know there is one thing coming. And that is HOCKEY SEASON!!! I love this time of year cause you get a bunch of things, not just hockey. You get Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and all that good stuff. Since it’s always “perfect” weather in SoCal it’s nice to have things chill out a bit. Wish it would get colder and rain more this time of year is just doesn’t. The thing I love most is hockey though. You get one of the fastest most energetic sporting event around.
At the beginning of the season you get to see some of the young players the teams have in their “system” meaning you get to see what is to come in a few years. You get to know names of players that might not be playing in the NHL for a few more years if at all. But you get to see some pretty great talent before if blossoms. If your a Los Angeles Kings fan you also get Frozen Fury in Las Vegas. Jordan, Elvia and I went last year and it was a blast. We go to Vegas quite a bit, but I think we all agree that was our most exciting trip. And here it is the end of September and we’re going again. This time with Jase and Geri. I’m looking forward to the time sitting in the pool and hot tub. The dinner and drinks at both the Hofbräuhaus and Shibuya. The times spent at the craps table and late, late night hovering over the video poker. Most of all, I’m looking forward to the Kings game while wearing my Kings jersey. Of course most of the things we’ll be doing I’ll be in my jersey.
